In 1895 Thomas Henry Huxley, known as Darwin’s Bulldog for his support of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, died aged 70. On June 30, 1860, he took part in the Oxford evolution debate when the Rt Rev Samuel Wilberforce (the Bishop of Oxford, aka Soapy Sam) reportedly taunted Huxley about his ape ancestry. Huxley is claimed to have replied: “If then the question is put to me whether I would rather have a miserable ape for a grandfather or a man highly endowed by nature and possessed of great means of influence and yet employs these faculties and that influence for the purpose of introducing ridicule into a grave scientific discussion, I unhesitatingly affirm my preference for the ape”; in 1934 the Nazi purge, Hitler’s Night of the Long Knives, broke the power of the Sturmabteilung (SA, or stormtroopers), and led to the murder of the SA head, Ernst Röhm; in 2009 a freight train carrying liquefied gas derailed in the resort of Viareggio, Tuscany, Italy, setting off an explosion and a fire that killed 32 people and injured 26; in 2021 England beat Germany 2-0 during the Euro 2020 football tournament — the first knockout victory over Germany since the 1966 World Cup final.

In 1936 Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind was published; in 1960, after 52 years as a Belgian colony, the Republic of the Congo was created. In 1971 it became Zaire, then in 1997 the Democratic Republic of Congo; in 1985, 39 American hostages held by the Shia Muslim Amal militia in Lebanon were released; in 1894 Tower Bridge, in London, was officially opened by the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII. The bascule bridge had taken eight years and 432 manual workers to construct.
Nature notes
Halloween is far away, but there’s a summer-blooming flower that wouldn’t look out of place adorning a trick or treat parade. Woody nightshade is a common scrambling plant that can climb 2m up through hedges and brambles. Before fully opening, its purple and yellow flowers hang down like lurid lanterns. On opening, they become psychedelic stars. This colour combination is a clear warning of the plant’s toxicity to humans and many herbivores. The glinting red berry that follows can make us sick. Human fatalities are very rare however, because the berry is so bitter-tasting most people couldn’t eat it. The plant’s litany of alternative names show that it’s best avoided: poisonberry, poisonflower, felonwort, bittersweet and snakeberry. Jonathan Tulloch
